Door and window surrounds have to match the opening exactly, so dimensional accuracy is held tighter than for any other use: length and width tolerance, diagonal error, mitre angle. Miss one and the piece either will not go in or leaves a gap. Choose a stone with an even structure that does not chip at the edges. Surfaces are usually polished or honed; a coarse bush hammered finish looks wrong indoors and is hard to clean. These pieces are normally cut to site-measured dimensions.
