Coping is the row of stone that caps the top of a wall, covering the wall body and shedding rainwater. What matters is not the pattern but dimensional consistency and frost resistance — with insufficient frost resistance, northern projects see the surface spall after a few winters. The usual detail is a long single piece slightly wider than the wall, with a drip groove underneath so water does not run down the wall face.
